Sermon & Lesson Planning

Bible Lesson Planning Template

A structured outline for preparing a single Bible lesson for any teaching setting.

Overview

A printable outline for preparing a single Bible lesson, whether for a Sunday school class, a youth group, or a one-time teaching session, built around a clear passage, a clear point, and a clear response.

Historical and Ministry Context

Jesus taught in short, memorable units built around parables, questions, and object lessons drawn from daily life (Matthew 13:34). A well-planned lesson follows the same instinct: one clear passage, one clear idea, taught in a way learners can carry with them.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house.

Deuteronomy 6:7 (KJV)

All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them.

Matthew 13:34 (KJV)

What Scripture Explicitly Says

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 commands ongoing, woven-into-life teaching, not a single event; Jesus's own teaching method used everyday images (seed, yeast, sheep) so ordinary listeners could remember and apply his words.

Questions Christians Discuss

Common Christian Interpretation

Teachers differ on how much structure a lesson needs versus how much should flow from group questions in the moment; most experienced teachers still prepare a clear plan even when they hold it loosely.

Gospel Connection

Every Bible lesson, even one on an Old Testament narrative, should help learners see how the passage fits within God's larger redemptive story that culminates in Jesus Christ.

Practical Application

Template steps: (1) Choose one passage and read it several times in context. (2) Write the single main idea of the lesson in one sentence. (3) Write two to three simple sub-points that unpack that idea. (4) Choose one illustration, object lesson, or story appropriate to your audience. (5) Prepare two to three discussion or review questions. (6) Write one specific application learners can act on this week. (7) Plan a short closing prayer that reflects the lesson's content.

Cross References

Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) - Train up a child in the way he should go. 2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV) - Committing teaching to faithful men who will teach others also. Nehemiah 8:8 (KJV) - Reading distinctly and giving the sense.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1

What is the single most important idea you want your learners to remember after this lesson?

  2. 2

Does your illustration genuinely serve the passage, or does it distract from it?

  3. 3

What follow-up will you do to see whether the application actually took root?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the privilege of teaching your word.

Give me clarity to teach simply and faithfully, and help the truth take root in the hearts of those who listen. Amen.
