New Birth

What Jesus teaches Nicodemus about being born again in John 3, and how the New Testament describes the transformation that happens at conversion.

At a Glance

The new birth is the Spirit's work of giving spiritual life to a sinner, necessary for anyone — regardless of religious credentials — to enter God's kingdom.

Overview

The new birth is the spiritual regeneration by which God gives a sinner new life, described by Jesus as being 'born again,' necessary for anyone to enter the kingdom of God, and worked by the Holy Spirit rather than achieved by human effort.

Learning Objectives

  • •Explain why Jesus told Nicodemus, a respected religious teacher, that he must be born again.
  • •Distinguish the new birth as God's sovereign work from human religious effort.
  • •Identify the evidence of new birth described in 1 John.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 3:6

Read It in Context

This study quotes John 3:6, but no verse stands alone. Open a Bible and read the whole surrounding chapter to see the full argument the passage sits within, then look up the other references cited throughout this study — John 3:3 and beyond — in their own context. Scripture is the final authority here, not this summary.

Historical & Literary Context

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews, a man with impeccable religious credentials, yet Jesus told him plainly that he must be born again to see the kingdom of God (John 3:1-3). Nicodemus's confusion, taking the phrase literally as a second physical birth, gave Jesus the occasion to explain that this birth is spiritual, worked by the Spirit, and as mysterious and sovereign in its movement as the wind (John 3:8).

Necessary for Everyone

John 3:3 and 3:7 make the new birth a universal requirement, not an option for the especially devout; Jesus tells the religiously accomplished Nicodemus, 'Ye must be born again,' showing that religious credentials cannot substitute for this spiritual transformation.

A Work of the Spirit, Not the Flesh

John 3:6 distinguishes what is 'born of the flesh,' which remains flesh no matter how refined, from what is 'born of the Spirit,' a genuinely new kind of life that only God's Spirit can produce (see also Titus 3:5).

Evidence of the New Birth

1 John reflects repeatedly on the marks of the new birth: practicing righteousness (1 John 2:29), not continuing in habitual sin (1 John 3:9), loving fellow believers (1 John 4:7), and overcoming the world (1 John 5:4), giving believers a way to test the reality of this new life in themselves.

Christ-Centered Focus

1 Peter 1:3 says believers are 'begotten again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,' rooting the new birth directly in Christ's own resurrection, so that the believer's new life is inseparably tied to Christ's risen life.

Practical Application

This week, test the reality of the new birth in your own life using 1 John's marks, especially love for other believers (1 John 4:7), and thank God specifically for the new life he has given rather than one you achieved.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the new birth You worked in me by Your Spirit, not by my own effort or religious performance. Let the evidence of that new life show clearly in righteousness, in love for others, and in growing freedom from sin. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Scripture Memory

"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
