Study #164·Self-Deliverance & Spiritual Warfare

Can a Christian Have a Demon?

A careful theological study distinguishing explicit Scripture from inference. Examines Romans 8:9, 1 Corinthians 6:19, 1 John 4:4, Ephesians 4:27, 2 Corinthians 11:3, and Gospel deliverance accounts. The A/B/C/D framework. Not a test of salvation. Believers who love Christ and respect Scripture reach different conclusions.

Few questions in deliverance ministry are more debated than whether a born-again, Spirit-indwelt believer can have an indwelling demon. This study does not pretend the question is simple. It does not use the question as a test of salvation or fellowship. Instead, it examines what Scripture explicitly says, what it strongly implies, where theological interpretation is needed, and what remains unsupported. The goal is honesty: to say clearly what Scripture establishes and to label inference as inference. Believers of genuine faith and careful study have reached different conclusions on this question. Back To Truth holds a position, but it does not condemn those who disagree.

Key Scripture

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 8:9 (KJV)

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

1 John 4:4 (KJV)

Context

The question of whether a Christian can have a demon requires careful definition. The word 'have' can mean different things. It can mean full possession, where a demon controls a person's will and identity. It can mean oppression, where a demon attacks from outside. It can mean influence, where a demon deceives or tempts. It can mean a foothold, where sin has given the enemy access to a particular area of a person's life. These are very different things, and failing to distinguish them has caused much confusion and division.

This study will use the following definitions: 'possession' means a demon indwells and controls a person. 'Oppression' or 'influence' means a demon attacks, tempts, or deceives from outside. 'Foothold' or 'opportunity' means that sin has given the enemy access to influence a person in a specific area. The question is whether a regenerate, Spirit-indwelt believer can experience any of these.

Read Romans 8:1-17, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Ephesians 1:13-14, Colossians 1:13-14, 1 John 4:1-6, Ephesians 4:17-32, 2 Corinthians 11:1-15, and the Gospel accounts of deliverance before working through this study.

What Scripture Explicitly Says

The Believer Belongs to Christ and Has the Holy Spirit

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 8:9 (KJV)

Scripture explicitly teaches that every believer has the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. Paul says that if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Him. The Holy Spirit indwells every believer from the moment of salvation. This is not a second experience or a special anointing. It is the normal reality of every Christian.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 Corinthians 6:19 (KJV)

The believer's body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit dwells within. This is explicit Scripture. The believer belongs to God, purchased by the blood of Christ, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

The Believer Has Been Transferred to the Kingdom of Christ

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.

Colossians 1:13 (KJV)

Scripture explicitly teaches that the believer has been delivered from the dominion of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of Christ. This is a completed reality. The believer is no longer under the authority of darkness.

Greater Is He Who Is in the Believer

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

1 John 4:4 (KJV)

John explicitly says that the One who is in the believer is greater than the one who is in the world. The Holy Spirit within the believer is greater than any demonic force. This is a foundational truth for the believer's confidence.

Believers Are Warned About the Devil's Activity

Neither give place to the devil.

Ephesians 4:27 (KJV)

Scripture explicitly warns believers not to give place, or opportunity, to the devil. This warning would be unnecessary if believers were immune to all demonic influence. The fact that Paul warns believers means that believers can give the enemy a foothold through sin, particularly through unresolved anger (Ephesians 4:26-27).

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

2 Corinthians 11:3 (KJV)

Paul feared that believers' minds could be corrupted by the serpent's cunning, just as Eve was deceived. This is a warning to believers about demonic deception. The fact that Paul warns believers means that believers are not immune to deception.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)

Peter warns believers about the devil who seeks to devour them. He tells them to resist. The fact that he tells believers to resist means that believers face real spiritual opposition.

What Scripture Does Not Explicitly Show

Here is where honesty requires careful distinction. Scripture does not explicitly show a person identified as a regenerate, Spirit-indwelt believer having an indwelling demon. The New Testament accounts of deliverance involve individuals whose spiritual state before Christ is not always specified. Some may have been believers, some may not have been. Scripture does not provide a clear, unambiguous case of a born-again, Spirit-indwelt Christian with a demon dwelling inside them.

This is significant. The explicit accounts of deliverance in the Gospels and Acts involve people who are described as demon-possessed, oppressed, or afflicted, but whose spiritual state as regenerate believers is not established. The woman with the spirit of infirmity (Luke 13:11-16), the daughter of the Syrophoenician woman (Mark 7:25-30), the boy with the mute spirit (Mark 9:17-29), the man in the synagogue (Mark 1:23-28), and the Gadarene demoniac (Mark 5:1-20) are not identified as Spirit-indwelt believers.

At the same time, Scripture does not explicitly say that a believer cannot experience any form of demonic influence, oppression, or foothold. The warnings in Ephesians 4:27, 2 Corinthians 11:3, and 1 Peter 5:8-9 indicate that believers face real spiritual opposition. The question is what form that opposition takes and whether it includes indwelling.

Biblical Discernment: The A/B/C/D Framework

Using the theological classification system, we can organize what Scripture says and does not say about this question:

  1. 1

    A. EXPLICIT SCRIPTURE: Every believer has the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). The believer's body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). The believer has been transferred from darkness to the kingdom of Christ (Colossians 1:13). The One in the believer is greater than the one in the world (1 John 4:4). Believers are warned not to give place to the devil (Ephesians 4:27). Believers can be deceived (2 Corinthians 11:3). Believers face a real adversary (1 Peter 5:8-9).

  2. 2

    B. STRONG BIBLICAL INFERENCE: The believer's union with Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit create a fundamental change in the believer's relationship to the demonic realm. The believer is no longer under the dominion of darkness (Colossians 1:13). The warnings to believers suggest that while the believer's position in Christ is secure, the believer's experience can be affected by the enemy through sin, deception, or spiritual attack.

  3. 3

    C. THEOLOGICAL / MINISTRY INTERPRETATION: Different traditions within the Christian church have reached different conclusions about whether a believer can have an indwelling demon. Some hold that the indwelling Holy Spirit makes demonization of a believer impossible. Others hold that a believer can have a demon in a specific area while still belonging to Christ, particularly through unconfessed sin or occult involvement. This is a matter of theological interpretation and ministry experience, not of explicit biblical statement. Back To Truth holds that the believer's position in Christ is secure and that the indwelling Holy Spirit is the believer's protection, while also taking seriously the biblical warnings about giving place to the devil.

  4. 4

    D. UNSUPPORTED / CONTRADICTED: The claim that a believer can be fully possessed by a demon in the same way an unbeliever can, with the demon controlling the believer's will and identity, is not supported by Scripture and appears to contradict the explicit teaching that the believer belongs to Christ and has the Holy Spirit. The claim that believers are immune to all demonic influence, temptation, and deception is contradicted by the explicit warnings in Ephesians 4:27, 2 Corinthians 11:3, and 1 Peter 5:8-9.

What Scripture Does Not Establish

Scripture does not establish a definitive answer to the question of whether a regenerate, Spirit-indwelt believer can have an indwelling demon. The explicit passages about the believer's identity in Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit strongly suggest that full demonization of a believer is not consistent with the believer's position in Christ. The warnings to believers about the devil's activity clearly establish that believers are not immune to spiritual attack, deception, and influence. What remains a matter of interpretation is whether demonic influence on a believer can include indwelling in a specific area, or whether it is limited to external attack, deception, and temptation.

Back To Truth holds that the believer's security in Christ is absolute and that the indwelling Holy Spirit is the believer's fundamental protection. We also take seriously the biblical warnings about giving place to the devil through sin. We do not make this question a test of salvation or fellowship. Believers who love Christ and respect Scripture have reached different conclusions. We encourage every believer to study the relevant passages carefully, to seek wise counsel, and to walk closely with God.

Practical Application

Rest in your identity in Christ. You belong to Him. The Holy Spirit dwells within you. The One in you is greater than the one in the world. This is your foundation. Do not live in fear of the enemy.

Take the warnings seriously. Do not give place to the devil through sin, particularly through unresolved anger, bitterness, or occult involvement. Confess sin quickly. Repent promptly. Keep short accounts with God.

Do not make this question a test of salvation. A believer's standing with God is based on faith in Jesus Christ, not on their position on this disputed question. Do not condemn believers who reach a different conclusion.

If you are struggling with what may be demonic influence, seek help. Talk to your pastor, a mature believer, or a trusted Christian counselor. Pray. Submit to God. Resist the devil. Stand firm in the authority of Jesus Christ.

Keep Christ central. Whatever your position on this question, the answer is always Jesus Christ. His blood, His authority, His Spirit, and His Word are the believer's protection and freedom. Fix your eyes on Him.
