The Historical Resurrection of Jesus

The historical case for Jesus's bodily resurrection and why it is the center of the Christian faith.

Overview

This study presents the historical case for the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ, the event on which the entire Christian faith stands or falls (1 Corinthians 15:14).

Historical and Literary Context

Paul's summary of the resurrection appearances in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, written roughly 20-25 years after the crucifixion, is widely regarded by historians across the theological spectrum as containing an even earlier creed, some date it to within a few years of the event itself, making it exceptionally early testimony by ancient historical standards.

Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (KJV)

He was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present.

1 Corinthians 15:6 (KJV)

What Scripture Explicitly Says

Scripture explicitly states Jesus died, was buried, rose bodily on the third day, and appeared to named individuals and groups, including over 500 people at once, most of whom Paul says were still alive and could be asked directly (1 Corinthians 15:3-8).

Questions Christians Discuss

Historical Evidence & Reasoning

Historians widely accept several 'minimal facts' regardless of their theological position: Jesus died by crucifixion, his tomb was found empty, multiple individuals and groups reported experiences they believed were appearances of the risen Jesus, and the early disciples were transformed from fear to bold public proclamation, even to the point of martyrdom. Naturalistic explanations (hallucination, theft, or legend) each struggle to account for the full range of this evidence together.

Gospel Connection

The resurrection is not one doctrine among many; it is the vindication of Jesus's claims and the guarantee of the believer's own future resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20-23). Without it, Paul says, Christian faith is futile and believers are still in their sins (1 Corinthians 15:17).

Practical Application

Because Christ is risen, believers face suffering, death, and daily struggle with unshakable hope, not as those without an answer, but as those who know how the story ends (1 Peter 1:3).

Cross References

Acts 2:32 (KJV) - This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Romans 1:4 (KJV) - Declared to be the Son of God with power... by the resurrection from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 (KJV) - A lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1

Which piece of historical evidence for the resurrection do you find most compelling, and why?

  2. 2

How does Paul's statement in 1 Corinthians 15:17 shape how central the resurrection is to the entire Christian faith?

  3. 3

How would you gently walk a skeptical friend through the minimal facts historians generally accept?

Prayer

Risen Lord Jesus, thank you that my faith rests on an event that actually happened in history.

Strengthen my confidence in your resurrection, and give me clear, humble words when I have the chance to share this hope with others. Amen.
