Identity in Christ

Your identity in Christ: you are a new creation, adopted into God's family, forgiven, justified, and called to live in holiness with the authority of Christ.

Key Scripture

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

Context

When you become a Christian, your identity changes. You are no longer defined by your past, your failures, your mistakes, or what others have said about you. Your identity is now in Christ. You belong to Him. You are a new creation. Everything has changed, even if your circumstances have not.

Many Christians live with shame and condemnation about their past. They do not understand who they are now. They have not grasped the truth of their identity in Christ. But the Bible teaches clearly that if you are a believer in Jesus, you are not what you used to be. You are not even what you feel like you are. You are what God says you are. You are in Christ.

Understanding your identity in Christ will transform how you live. It will free you from shame. It will give you confidence. It will help you resist temptation. It will enable you to serve God boldly. It will fill you with hope for your future.

What Does the Bible Say?

You Are a New Creation

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

When you believe in Jesus, you become a new creature. This does not mean you instantly become perfect. It means you are made new in your spirit. Your old identity passes away. Your new identity is in Christ. You are no longer enslaved to sin. You are free.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20 (KJV)

Your old self was crucified with Christ. You died to your old way of living. Now Christ lives in you. Your life is no longer your own. It belongs to Christ. You live by faith in Him. This is who you are now.

You Are Adopted Into God's Family

According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.

Ephesians 1:4-5 (KJV)

God chose you before the foundation of the world. He predestinated you to be His child. You are adopted into God's family. You are not a servant trying to earn His favor. You are a beloved child. God is your Father.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Romans 8:15-17 (KJV)

You have not received a spirit of bondage or fear. You have received the spirit of adoption. You are a child of God. The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you belong to God. You are not just a child. You are an heir of God. You are a joint heir with Christ. Everything that belongs to Christ belongs to you.

You Are Forgiven and Justified

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

Ephesians 1:7 (KJV)

Through Jesus, we have redemption. Our sins are forgiven. This forgiveness is not based on how good we are or how sorry we feel. It is based on the riches of God's grace. It is complete and total.

Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

Romans 4:7-8 (KJV)

Your sins are covered. God will not count your sins against you. You are blessed because your iniquities are forgiven. No matter what you have done, if you are in Christ, you are forgiven.

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Romans 3:24-26 (KJV)

You are justified. To be justified means to be declared righteous. God has declared you righteous through Jesus. This is a legal standing. God sees you as righteous because Christ took your sin and gave you His righteousness.

You Are Called to Holiness

As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance; But as he which hath called you is holy, even so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

1 Peter 1:14-16 (KJV)

You are called to be holy. Holiness is not optional for Christians. It is a requirement. You are no longer to live according to your former lusts and desires. You are to be holy because God is holy. As His child, you are to reflect His character.

For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 (KJV)

God's will for you is your sanctification. This means God wants you to grow in holiness. He wants you to put away sin. He wants you to live in purity and honor. This is not punishment. It is God's loving will for your wellbeing and joy.

You Are Sealed and Secure

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:13-14 (KJV)

When you believe in Jesus, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit. You are secure. You belong to God. The Holy Spirit is your guarantee that God will complete His work in you and that you will receive all He has promised.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)

Nothing can separate you from God's love. Not death, not life, not demons, not present circumstances, not future events. Nothing in all creation can separate you from His love. Your security is in Christ.

You Are Accepted and Beloved

To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Ephesians 1:6 (KJV)

You are accepted in the beloved. You are accepted in Jesus. God does not accept you because of what you do or who you are. He accepts you because you are in Christ. Christ is beloved by God, and because you are in Christ, you are beloved too.

The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Zephaniah 3:17 (KJV)

God rejoices over you. He is happy about you. He sings over you. This is the heart of God toward His children. You are precious to Him. You are beloved.

Understanding the Passage

Your identity in Christ is not based on your feelings or your circumstances. It is based on what God says about you in His Word. God says you are a new creation. God says you are His child. God says you are forgiven. God says you are righteous. God says you are secure. God says you are beloved. These are absolute truths regardless of how you feel on any given day.

Understanding your identity in Christ is crucial for living a victorious Christian life. When temptation comes, you can remember that you are a new creation and you no longer have to sin. When shame comes, you can remember that you are forgiven and accepted. When fear comes, you can remember that you are secure in God's love. When you feel alone, you can remember that you are God's beloved child.

Your identity has changed completely. Your past does not define you. Your failures do not disqualify you. Your mistakes do not condemn you. You are in Christ, and in Christ you are a new creation. Old things have passed away. All things have become new.

What This Means Today

If you are a believer in Jesus, you must renew your mind about who you are. You are not a failure. You are not condemned. You are not rejected. You are not unworthy. You are a child of God. You are beloved. You are accepted. You are forgiven. You are righteous. You are secure. These are your true identities.

Stop allowing your past to define you. Your past is past. It has been forgiven and covered by the blood of Jesus. You are a new creation. You have a new identity. You have a new future. God has plans for you. He has a purpose for your life. He loves you completely.

Live according to your true identity. You are not a slave to sin anymore. You are a child of the King. Act like who you really are. When you are tempted to sin, remember that you are a new creation. When shame tries to speak to you, remember that you are forgiven. When fear tries to overwhelm you, remember that you are secure in God's love.

Your identity in Christ gives you security, belonging, and confidence to obey God. You are a child of God and an heir with Christ. You are not called to prove your identity through dramatic spiritual acts. You can resist sin, love others, pray, stand firm against the devil, and serve boldly because you belong to Christ and the Holy Spirit is at work in you.

Remember that you are called to holiness. This is not a burden. It is a privilege. God is not punishing you by calling you to holiness. He is blessing you. Holiness leads to freedom and joy. As you grow in holiness, you experience more of God's peace and His presence.
