The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God. He convicts of sin, regenerates, indwells believers, sanctifies, empowers for service, and produces spiritual fruit in our lives.
Key Scripture
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 14:16-17 (KJV)
Context
Jesus promised His disciples that after His ascension, the Holy Spirit would come. The Holy Spirit is not a force or an influence. He is a person. He is God. He is the third person of the Trinity. Just as the Father is God and the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God. He has been present throughout all of Scripture, but after Jesus ascended to heaven, He came in a new and fuller way.
Many Christians are confused about the Holy Spirit. Some do not believe He is real or active today. Some are afraid of Him. Some do not understand His work in their lives. But the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is essential to the Christian life. He is the one who convicts us of sin. He is the one who gives us new life. He is the one who lives in us. He is the one who transforms us into the image of Christ. He is the one who gives us power and authority.
Understanding who the Holy Spirit is and what He does will transform your Christian life. It will give you confidence in your authority over darkness. It will help you grow in holiness. It will empower you to serve God effectively. It will fill you with joy and peace.
What Does the Bible Say?
The Holy Spirit Is God
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 2:10-11 (KJV)
The Holy Spirit is described as God. He searches all things. He knows the deep things of God. Only God knows the things of God. This shows that the Holy Spirit is not a lesser being. He is equal to God the Father.
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Acts 5:3-4 (KJV)
Peter equates lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God. This shows that the Holy Spirit is God. He deserves the same honor and respect as God the Father.
The Holy Spirit Convicts of Sin
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
John 16:8-11 (KJV)
The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin. He shows people that they are sinners. He shows them their need for Jesus. He makes them aware of their guilt and separation from God. This conviction is not meant to condemn. It is meant to lead people to repentance and to Jesus.
The Holy Spirit Regenerates
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
John 3:5-7 (KJV)
To be born again means to be regenerated by the Holy Spirit. When we repent and believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit gives us new life. We are born again. We become children of God. We are no longer dead in sin. We are alive in Christ.
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Titus 3:5-6 (KJV)
The Holy Spirit renews us. He washes us. He gives us a new start. Salvation comes through His renewing work in our lives. He gives us new hearts and new spirits.
The Holy Spirit Indwells Believers
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
When we are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. Our bodies become His temple. He dwells in us permanently. This is one of the greatest gifts of salvation. We are never alone. God Himself lives in us through the Holy Spirit.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14 (KJV)
When we believe in Jesus, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit. This seal is a guarantee. It is a deposit that promises us eternal life. The Holy Spirit in us is proof that we belong to God and that we will live with Him forever.
The Holy Spirit Sanctifies
But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.
2 Thessalonians 2:13 (KJV)
Sanctification means being made holy. The Holy Spirit makes us holy. He works in us to transform us from sin into righteousness. This is a process that continues throughout our Christian lives. The Holy Spirit empowers us to say no to sin and yes to righteousness.
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:13-14 (KJV)
The Holy Spirit gives us power to put to death the deeds of the flesh. He helps us overcome sin. He leads us in the way of righteousness. As we follow His leading, we prove ourselves to be sons and daughters of God.
The Holy Spirit Empowers
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 1:8 (KJV)
The Holy Spirit empowers believers for holy living, witness, service, prayer, endurance, and the exercise of spiritual gifts according to His will. The New Testament records miracles and deliverance in the ministry of some believers, but these should not be presented as identical functions every Christian must perform. The Spirit distributes gifts as He wills, and Christlike character remains central.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
The Holy Spirit gives us power, love, and a sound mind. He does not give us fear. He gives us boldness and confidence. He gives us the ability to love others. He gives us clarity of thinking and wisdom.
The Holy Spirit Produces Fruit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)
As the Holy Spirit works in our lives, He produces spiritual fruit. This fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are not qualities we produce ourselves. The Holy Spirit produces them in us as we surrender to Him and follow His leading.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:4-5 (KJV)
We cannot produce spiritual fruit on our own. We must abide in Jesus. We must stay connected to Him. As we do, the Holy Spirit works in us to produce fruit that lasts. Without Jesus and His Holy Spirit, we can do nothing that truly matters.
Understanding the Passage
The Holy Spirit is the promised gift of Jesus. When Jesus ascended to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to live in believers. This was not a downgrade or a second-best gift. The Holy Spirit is God Himself dwelling in us. He is the one who continues the work of Jesus in our lives.
The Holy Spirit is essential to salvation. Without Him, we cannot be convicted of sin. Without Him, we cannot be born again. Without Him, we cannot be forgiven and cleansed. The entire work of salvation is accomplished through the work of the Holy Spirit in response to our faith in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit is our guide and teacher. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would teach us and bring to remembrance the things He had taught. The Holy Spirit reveals Scripture to us. He illuminates God's Word. He shows us how to apply Scripture to our lives. He convicts us when we stray from God's truth.
The Holy Spirit supplies what believers cannot produce by natural strength alone: courage for witness, help in resisting sin, endurance in suffering, love for others, wisdom, prayer, and gifts for service. Scripture records extraordinary works of the Spirit, but spiritual maturity is not measured by dramatic power. The Spirit's work always points to Jesus Christ and produces holy character.
The Holy Spirit is the seal and guarantee of our salvation. He marks us as belonging to God. He promises us that we will inherit all that Christ has promised us. He is the earnest, the down payment, of our eternal inheritance. As long as the Holy Spirit indwells us, we are secure in our salvation.
What This Means Today
If you are a believer in Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in you right now. He is not far away. He is not separate from you. He is in you. This should give you tremendous confidence and boldness. You are never alone. You are never without help. You are never without strength. God Himself lives in you.
The Holy Spirit is available to help you every day. When you face temptation, He gives you the power to resist. When you face fear, He gives you courage. When you do not know what to do, He gives you wisdom. When you are sad, He brings comfort. When you are confused, He brings clarity. You can call on Him at any moment.
The Holy Spirit wants to transform you. He wants to make you more like Jesus. He works in you to remove the fruit of sin and replace it with the fruit of the Spirit. This is a process. You will not be instantly perfected. But day by day, as you surrender to Him and follow His leading, He will change you from the inside out.
The Holy Spirit strengthens believers to stand firm in spiritual warfare through truth, prayer, holiness, discernment, and dependence on Christ. The New Testament records direct confrontation with unclean spirits, but no believer should treat that ministry as a required proof of faith or as a formula for power. Pray confidently, submit to God's will, and serve according to the gifts and calling the Spirit gives.
The Holy Spirit gives you gifts for ministry. He gives different gifts to different believers so that the church can function and grow. Some have the gift of teaching, some healing, some prophecy, some discernment, and many others. Your gifts are meant to be used to serve others and build up the body of Christ.
The Holy Spirit creates conviction about sin in the world. If you are feeling convicted about something in your life, that may be the Holy Spirit speaking to you. Listen to Him. Respond to His conviction. Repent and turn away from sin. His conviction is meant to bring you back to righteousness and health.
