Study #6·Getting Started / Foundational

Prayer

Prayer is communication with God the Father through Jesus Christ. We pray to bring our requests to God, to worship Him, to seek His will, and to maintain our relationship with Him.

Key Scripture

Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

Context

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools given to believers. It is our direct line to God the Father. It is how we communicate with Him, bring our requests to Him, worship Him, and align ourselves with His will. Yet many Christians are unsure how to pray, feel like their prayers are not being answered, or do not understand why prayer matters.

Jesus taught His disciples to pray. He modeled prayer throughout His life. He showed us that prayer is not about using fancy words or performing for an audience. Prayer is simply talking to God as a child talks to a loving Father. It is honest, real, and direct. It is the foundation of a strong Christian life.

Prayer is a central part of the Christian life because it is communion with God, dependence on Him, confession, thanksgiving, intercession, and worship. Prayer is not a technique for accessing power or controlling outcomes. Through prayer believers bring their needs to God, seek His wisdom, resist evil in dependence on Him, and grow in relationship with Jesus Christ.

What Does the Bible Say?

Prayer Is Commanded

Pray without ceasing.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

We are commanded to pray without ceasing. This does not mean you must be on your knees all day long. It means maintaining an attitude of prayer throughout your day. It means talking to God constantly, bringing every situation to Him, seeking His guidance in all things.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Philippians 4:6 (KJV)

Instead of worrying, we are to bring our concerns to God in prayer. We are to be specific in our requests. We are to add thanksgiving to our prayers. This combination of prayer and thanksgiving produces the peace of God.

Jesus Taught Us How to Pray

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut to thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Matthew 6:6-13 (KJV)

Jesus taught His disciples the model prayer. This prayer teaches us to begin by honoring God's name, to seek His kingdom first, to ask for provision, to seek forgiveness, and to ask for God's protection. Prayer is not about impressing God with words. It is about connecting with our Father with sincerity and humility.

We Approach God Through Jesus Christ

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

John 14:13-14 (KJV)

We do not approach God on our own merit. We approach God through Jesus Christ. When we pray in His name, we are coming to the Father with the authority and righteousness of Christ. This is why our prayers are heard and answered.

By whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

Ephesians 3:12 (KJV)

Through Jesus, we have boldness to approach God's throne. We have access to the Father. We can come with confidence because we come through Christ who is our advocate and our mediator.

We Must Have Faith

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Mark 11:24 (KJV)

When we pray, we must believe. We must believe that God hears us. We must believe that God is willing and able to answer. We must believe that what we ask for is already ours. This kind of faith is not presumption. It is trust in God's character and His word.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)

To please God, we must have faith. We must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. When we pray in faith, we please God and we position ourselves to receive His rewards.

We Must Persist in Prayer

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.

Luke 18:1 (KJV)

We should always pray and never give up. Jesus told a parable about a widow who kept asking a judge for justice until he granted her request. The point is that we should persist in prayer even when answers do not come immediately.

Pray without ceasing.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

Persistence in prayer is not just about asking again and again. It is about maintaining a continuous relationship with God. It is about never stopping the conversation. It is about trusting that God is working even when we do not see visible results.

We Must Pray According to God's Will

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

1 John 5:14-15 (KJV)

When we pray according to God's will, we can be confident that God hears us and will answer. The key is aligning our prayers with what God desires. This is not limiting. It is liberating. God's will is always for our good.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27 (KJV)

When we do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit helps us. He intercedes for us according to God's will. We do not have to have all the right words. The Holy Spirit translates our deepest longings and groans into prayers that align with God's will.

Understanding the Passage

Prayer is not a luxury for Christians. It is part of our ongoing relationship with God: worship, confession, thanksgiving, petition, intercession, and dependence. Prayer is not a technique for accessing divine power or overcoming every obstacle on demand. Through prayer we seek God's wisdom, bring Him our needs, and submit ourselves to His will.

Prayer matters because we are speaking to the living God, who hears His people and is able to act according to His wisdom and will. Praying in Jesus' name is not a way to force His authority onto a situation; it means coming to the Father through Christ and asking in a way consistent with His character and purposes. We pray with confidence in God, not confidence in a verbal formula.

God wants us to pray. He wants us to bring our requests to Him. He wants to be involved in every area of our lives. Prayer is how we invite God into our circumstances. Prayer is how we acknowledge that we need Him. Prayer is how we experience His guidance and provision.

What This Means Today

You should be praying throughout your day. When you face a decision, pray about it. When you face a problem, pray about it. When you face temptation, pray about it. When you want to worship God, pray about it. Prayer is not something you do only at certain times. Prayer is a lifestyle. It is a continuous conversation with your Father.

Do not worry about using the right words or being eloquent. Just be honest with God. Tell Him what you are feeling. Tell Him what you need. Ask Him for help. Thank Him for what He has done. Praise Him for who He is. Your Father is listening and He cares about everything you care about.

When you pray, pray in the name of Jesus. Remember that you do not approach God on your own merit. You approach Him through Christ. This gives you authority and confidence. Ask God to give you wisdom. Ask Him to guide you. Ask Him to protect you. Ask Him to empower you for spiritual warfare.

Do not give up on prayer. If your prayers are not answered immediately, keep praying. God is working even when you do not see it. Trust in His timing. Trust in His wisdom. He will answer in His perfect way and in His perfect time.

Learn to pray according to God's will. Study God's Word so you know what He wants. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your prayers. When you align your prayers with God's will, you can pray with confidence, knowing that God will answer.
