Salvation
Salvation is God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We are saved by grace, not by works, when we repent and believe in Jesus who died and rose again.
Key Scripture
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10 (KJV)
Context
The word 'salvation' comes from a Greek word that means 'to save' or 'to deliver.' But saved from what? Delivered from what? In Scripture, salvation means being saved from sin, from death, and from eternal separation from God. Salvation is the greatest gift God can give us.
Many people misunderstand what salvation truly is. Some think it is about being a good person. Some think it is about keeping rules and laws. Some think it is about attending church or performing religious rituals. But the Bible teaches clearly that salvation is not about our works. It is not something we can earn or deserve. Salvation is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Grace means undeserved favor. God extends to us what we do not deserve. We deserve death and separation from Him. But instead, He offers us life and connection with Him through Jesus. This is grace. And we receive this grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
What Does the Bible Say?
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:23-24 (KJV)
Everyone has sinned. There is no one who is righteous on their own. All of us have fallen short of God's glory. But God offers justification freely. To be justified means to be declared righteous. God declares us righteous not because we have earned it but because of the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. The price has been paid. We are free.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Romans 5:8-9 (KJV)
God's love is demonstrated in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We did not deserve His love. We were enemies of God through our sin. But Christ died for us anyway. Because we are now justified by His blood, we are saved from God's wrath. The punishment we deserved has been placed on Jesus instead.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:16-18 (KJV)
God's love for the world is so great that He gave His only Son. Salvation is offered to whosoever believes in Him. Not just to certain people or certain groups. Whosoever means everyone. Everyone is invited to believe in Jesus and receive eternal life.
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.
Acts 3:19 (KJV)
Salvation requires repentance. To repent means to turn around, to change direction, to turn away from sin and turn toward God. Repentance is not just feeling sorry for sin. It is a deliberate decision to turn from sin and follow Jesus.
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:8-10 (KJV)
Salvation involves both the heart and the mouth. We must believe in our heart that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead. We must confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord. This confession and belief together result in salvation.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
When we are saved, we become a new creature in Christ. Salvation is not just a legal matter where our sins are forgiven. It is a transformational event where we are born again. We become new. Our old way of life passes away. All things become new.
Understanding the Passage
Salvation is entirely the work of God's grace. We cannot save ourselves. We cannot earn our way to heaven. We cannot work hard enough or be good enough to deserve salvation. Salvation is a gift. It is offered freely to us because God loves us. All we have to do is receive it.
Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is not blind belief. It is trust in Jesus based on who He is and what He has done. We trust Him because He died for us. We trust Him because He rose from the dead. We trust Him because He offers us forgiveness and eternal life.
Salvation requires repentance. Repentance means we acknowledge our sin, we turn away from our sin, and we turn toward Jesus. It is a change of mind and a change of direction. We stop going our own way and we start following Jesus.
Salvation results in a new life. When we are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. We are born again. We become children of God. We are forgiven of all our sins. We are no longer condemned. We have peace with God. We have hope for eternity.
Salvation is not a one-time experience that we can lose. Once we are saved, we are always saved. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit. Nothing can separate us from God's love. But salvation should transform every area of our lives. We should live differently. We should think differently. We should treat people differently. We should pursue holiness.
What This Means Today
If you are not yet saved, today is the day of salvation. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2 that 'now is the day of salvation.' You do not have to wait. You do not have to be perfect or clean up your life first. Jesus accepts you as you are. All you have to do is believe in Him, repent of your sin, and confess Him as Lord.
If you are already saved, remember the wonder of your salvation. You were dead in sin. You were separated from God. You deserved judgment and death. But Jesus died for you. He rose from the dead for you. You are now forgiven. You are now a child of God. This should fill your heart with gratitude every single day.
Salvation should change how you live. If you truly understand what Jesus did for you, it will transform your priorities. It will affect your relationships, your work, your finances, your time, and your choices. You should want to serve Him. You should want to obey Him. You should want to tell others about Him.
Salvation gives believers confidence that they belong to Jesus Christ and are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. In spiritual warfare, that confidence should lead to prayer, resistance to the devil, obedience, truth, and dependence on God—not demands meant to prove personal authority. We have been bought with a price; we belong to Jesus.
Salvation connects us to the church. The church is not a building. The church is the body of Christ. It is all believers joined together. When you are saved, you are not alone. You are part of a family. You have brothers and sisters in Christ. You should connect with other believers, support one another, grow together, and serve together.
