Key Scripture
"Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for my holy name's sake."
Ezekiel 36:22
Repentance is not shame. It is not self-hatred or endless regret. Repentance is a turning away. It is a change of direction and a change of mind. It is the response God looks for when we recognize we have done wrong.
Repentance Is More Than Feeling Sorry
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
2 Corinthians 7:10
You can feel genuine sorrow for your sin without truly repenting. The world sorrow is self-pity. It is sadness that I got caught or that I am suffering the consequences. Godly sorrow is different. It is grief over having hurt God and violated His truth. It leads to a turning away.
Repentance Brings Forgiveness
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
God does not forgive reluctantly. When you confess your sin and turn from it, forgiveness is not uncertain. It is guaranteed. God is faithful to His own character. He is just to forgive because Christ already paid the penalty. You are clean. Not covered up. Clean.
Repentance Is Ongoing
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance.
Luke 3:8
Repentance is not just a one-time event at conversion. It is the posture of a believer who has genuinely encountered God. When you become aware of sin, you turn from it. This is why the Christian life involves regular confession and course correction. It shows that you take sin seriously and that you belong to God.
Prayer
Father, search my heart. Show me any sin I have not yet seen. I turn from it. I do not want to return to my old patterns. I receive Your forgiveness through Christ. Help me walk in the newness You have given me. Let my repentance produce fruit. In Jesus' name, amen.
