Identity in Christ

Who you are now that you belong to Jesus — and why your enemy does not want you to know it.

Key Scripture

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

Romans 8:1

One of the greatest weapons the enemy uses against believers is a false identity. He works to convince you that you are still defined by your past, your failures, or your feelings. But the Bible declares something completely different. Your identity is not what you have done. It is what Christ has done for you.

You Are a New Creation

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

This is one of the most radical statements in the New Testament. In Christ, you are not an improved version of your old self. You are a new creation. The old has gone. This is not a promise for the future. It is a declaration about right now. The enemy will work to make you forget this, which is why you need to return to it regularly and build your sense of self on what God says, not on how you feel.

You Are Adopted as a Child of God

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

John 1:12

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Romans 8:15

You are not a servant hoping to earn a place at the table. You have been adopted into the family of God. The word Abba is the intimate word a child uses for their father. You have direct access to the Creator of the universe, not as a stranger or a subject, but as a child. This changes everything about how you pray, how you approach God, and how you face your circumstances.

Live Under Christ's Authority

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Luke 10:19

Jesus gave His disciples authority in specific ministry settings, and the New Testament calls all believers to resist the devil, stand firm in faith, pray, and live under Christ's lordship. You are not helpless before spiritual opposition. Your confidence is not in personal power or worthiness, but in Jesus Christ, His Word, the Holy Spirit, and the life of the church.

You Are No Longer Under Condemnation

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:1

Romans 8:1 declares that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Revelation 12 describes Satan as an accuser, but not every guilty or condemning thought should automatically be labeled demonic. The gospel directs believers away from self-justification and toward Christ's saving work, repentance where needed, and the settled hope of belonging to Him.

Prayer

Father, help me receive what Your Word says about who I am in Christ. Thank You for adoption, forgiveness, and new life. Teach me to live under the lordship of Jesus, resist the devil as Scripture commands, and refuse condemnation that contradicts the gospel. Keep my identity grounded in Christ rather than in feelings, failures, spiritual experiences, or claims of personal power. In Jesus' name, amen.
