The Holy Spirit

Who the Holy Spirit is, what He does, and why every believer needs to know Him.

Key Scripture

"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

Acts 1:8

Many believers know about the Holy Spirit but do not know the Holy Spirit as a person. He is not a force or a feeling. He is the third person of the Trinity — fully God, present with every true believer, and essential to every aspect of the Christian life including deliverance.

Who the Holy Spirit Is

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

John 14:16-17

Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Comforter — the one called alongside to help. He is a person, not a power. He speaks, teaches, guides, intercedes, and grieves. He is the Spirit of truth who leads us into all truth. He does not speak on His own authority but declares what He receives from the Father and the Son.

The Holy Spirit Convicts and Converts

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.

John 16:8

No one comes to faith in Christ without the work of the Holy Spirit. He is the one who opens our eyes to our sin, who makes the gospel real to our hearts, and who draws us to repentance. If you have been moved by the Word of God, if you have felt the weight of your need for Christ, that is the Holy Spirit at work in you.

The Holy Spirit Indwells Every Believer

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 Corinthians 6:19

At salvation, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in you. Your body becomes His temple. This is not a metaphor for feeling inspired. He literally lives in you. This is one reason why what you do with your body matters, why what you allow into your mind matters, and why the enemy cannot own what belongs to God.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:4

Acts 2 records the disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Christians differ on how to understand Spirit baptism and experiences of empowerment after conversion. Scripture clearly teaches that everyone who belongs to Christ has His Spirit (Romans 8:9), and speaking in tongues is not presented as a requirement for salvation (see 1 Corinthians 12:29–30). Believers can continually seek the Spirit's help to follow Christ and bear witness to Him.

Prayer

Father, I thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. I welcome Him fully into my life. I ask You to fill me with Your Spirit — not just for a moment but as a continual reality. Teach me to be sensitive to His voice, to follow His leading, and to not grieve Him with my choices. In the name of Jesus, amen.
