Growing in Discernment
Discernment is not suspicion. It is the Spirit-given and Scripture-anchored ability to distinguish truth from error, genuine spiritual reality from counterfeit, and what builds the body of Christ from what undermines it. This path studies what the Bible teaches about discernment and how to cultivate it.
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Study Steps
First John 4:1 commands believers to test every spirit because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This testing is not optional for mature believers only. It is a baseline requirement for every person who wants to walk in truth. Hebrews 5:14 connects discernment with maturity in the Word: mature people have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice. Read these passages and identify what each one says about how discernment is developed and what it is tested against.
Reflection
On what basis do you typically evaluate a teaching or spiritual claim? What role does the biblical text play in that evaluation compared to your own experience, the popularity of the teacher, or the emotional impact of the message?
Prayer
Father, I want to grow in discernment. I acknowledge that I cannot trust every voice, every feeling, or every experience without testing it. Teach me to test everything by Your Word, to hold fast to what is good, and to refuse what is false. Give me a love for truth that makes me unwilling to accept anything less. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
