Key Scripture
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth."
Romans 1:16
The word gospel means good news. But good news only makes sense when you first understand the problem it is answering. The gospel of Jesus Christ is not a self-improvement program or a religious system. It is God's answer to the most serious problem the human race has ever faced.
The Problem: Sin Has Separated Us from God
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23
Sin is not primarily about bad habits. It is rebellion against a holy God. The Bible says the penalty for that rebellion is death — spiritual death first, then physical death, then eternal separation from God. Every person who has ever lived, apart from Jesus, stands in this condition. This is not a secondary issue. It is the entire reason Jesus came.
The Solution: Jesus Paid the Price
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
God did not wait for us to clean ourselves up before sending help. While we were still in rebellion against Him, Christ died in our place. He bore the full penalty of our sin — the wrath that we deserved. This is called substitutionary atonement. He stood in our place. He took our punishment. He died the death we should have died.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
The Response: Repent and Believe
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
Mark 1:15
Jesus Himself gave us the two-part response to the gospel: repentance and faith. Repentance is a turning away from sin — a genuine change of direction, not just feeling sorry. Faith is trusting Christ entirely for your salvation, not your own goodness or religious performance. These are not things you do once and forget. They are the posture of a life submitted to Christ.
The Promise: Eternal Life
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16
The gospel is not only about escaping judgment. It is about entering life. Jesus came so that we could know God — the one true and living God — and that relationship begins now and continues forever. The gift is free, but it is not cheap. It cost Jesus everything. Do not receive it casually.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I understand now what the gospel is. I confess that I have sinned and that I need Your salvation. I thank You that You paid the price I could never pay. I repent of my sins and I place my full trust in You. I receive the gift of eternal life. Teach me what it means to follow You. In Your name, amen.
