Understanding Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare is one part of Christian discipleship, not a specialty identity or a reason to view every difficulty as spiritual attack. This path examines what Scripture says about resisting the devil, standing firm in faith, using the armor of God, and living under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Ephesians 6:10-122 Corinthians 10:3-51 Peter 5:8-9James 4:7

Ephesians 6:12 makes a clarification that is essential for understanding spiritual warfare: we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. The battle is not primarily against people, circumstances, or even difficult situations. It is against spiritual forces that stand opposed to God and to his people. Read these passages and identify what each one says about the nature of the opposition and the nature of the victory that is available.

Reflection

Is there a situation in your life right now where you have been treating a person as the primary source of your difficulty? How would understanding the spiritual dimension change how you respond to that situation?

Prayer

Father, I acknowledge that my struggle is not ultimately against flesh and blood. Give me eyes to see the spiritual dimensions of what I face. Teach me to fight the right battle with the right weapons. I stand in the strength that is Yours, not my own. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
