Overcoming Fear
Fear is one of the most common and most addressed themes in all of Scripture. This path does not offer a technique for managing anxiety. It offers something more substantial: an encounter with the God who repeatedly says 'Fear not' and gives the reason why. The reason is always himself.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

Study Steps
Before addressing fear, it helps to understand how Scripture categorizes it. There is a healthy reverent awe of God that Proverbs calls the beginning of wisdom. There is the tormenting dread that 1 John says perfect love casts out. There is the cowardly fear that Revelation warns against. And there is the ordinary human experience of feeling afraid that the Psalms address with radical honesty. Read these passages and identify which kind of fear Scripture is speaking to in each one.
Reflection
Which of the different kinds of fear described in Scripture most closely matches what you experience most often? What does the passage that addresses that kind of fear say about where its solution is found?
Prayer
Father, I come to You honestly about my fear. I am not pretending it is not there. You see it. Give me courage, love, and sound judgment as I follow Christ. Help me bring fear to You without shame, seek wise support when I need it, and keep trusting You one step at a time. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
