Small Group Bible Study Outline

A repeatable format for leading a small group through a passage of Scripture.

Overview

A repeatable four-part outline (Read, Understand, Apply, Pray) for leading a small group Bible study, designed to keep the group anchored in the text while still allowing real conversation.

Historical and Ministry Context

Acts 17:11 commends the Bereans for searching the Scriptures together to test what they were taught. Small group study continues this pattern: believers reading and reasoning through the text together rather than only receiving it passively.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Acts 17:11 (KJV)

Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works... exhorting one another.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (KJV)

What Scripture Explicitly Says

The Bereans tested teaching against Scripture as a group activity, and Hebrews commands believers to stir one another toward love and good works, both patterns small groups are built to practice.

Questions Christians Discuss

Common Christian Interpretation

Groups vary on how much of the session should be discussion versus teaching input from the leader; either approach can be faithful as long as the group stays anchored in the actual text rather than drifting into general opinion sharing.

Gospel Connection

A small group is a small picture of the church: gathered around the word, encouraging one another, and pointed together toward Christ (Colossians 3:16).

Practical Application

Outline: (1) Read the passage aloud, ideally twice. (2) Understand: ask what the passage says and what it meant to its original hearers before asking what it means today. (3) Apply: ask how this truth should change a belief, attitude, or action this week. (4) Pray: close by praying specifically in response to what was studied, using names and real needs from the group.

Cross References

Colossians 3:16 (KJV) - Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns. Proverbs 27:17 (KJV) - Iron sharpeneth iron. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (KJV) - Two are better than one.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1

Does your group spend enough time in the actual text before moving to application?

  2. 2

How well does your group currently practice the 'pray' step with specific, personal requests?

  3. 3

What would help quieter members of your group engage more in discussion?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the gift of studying your word together with other believers.

Help our group stay anchored in Scripture, encourage one another in love, and grow together toward Christ. Amen.
