Isaiah

The Messianic Prophet

The prophet whose visions of the suffering servant most clearly foretell Jesus Christ

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

Overview

Isaiah ministered in Judah during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, a period of political upheaval as Assyria rose to dominate the region. Called in a stunning vision of God's holiness in the temple, Isaiah prophesied both judgment against Judah's sin and extraordinary hope for a future restoration, including some of the clearest Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah found anywhere in Scripture, especially the suffering servant of Isaiah 53.

Gospel Connection

Isaiah is quoted more often in the New Testament than any other prophet, and for good reason: his prophecies form the clearest Old Testament outline of the Messiah's identity, birth, character, suffering, death, and future reign. Isaiah 53 alone reads almost like an eyewitness account of the crucifixion despite being written centuries before it happened, and Jesus applied Isaiah's prophecy of the Spirit-anointed servant to himself directly when he read from Isaiah 61 in the synagogue at Nazareth and said, 'This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.'
