Amos

Shepherd Prophet

A shepherd from Tekoa called from tending flocks to confront Israel's wealthy elite with God's demand for justice.

"But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream."

Amos 5:24 (KJV)

Overview

Amos was a shepherd and dresser of sycamore trees from Tekoa in Judah, with no formal prophetic training or lineage, yet God called him to travel north and prophesy against the prosperous but corrupt kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II. Israel was experiencing military success and material wealth at the time, but Amos exposed the rot beneath the surface: the wealthy oppressed the poor, courts favored bribes over justice, and religious ritual continued even as true worship of God had been abandoned in practice. Amos delivered oracles of judgment against surrounding nations before turning his sharpest words on Israel itself, declaring that their covenant privilege made their sin more serious, not less. When confronted by the priest Amaziah at Bethel and told to flee back to Judah, Amos insisted that God himself, not human ambition, had called him from the flock to prophesy. The book closes with a promise of future restoration for the fallen tabernacle of David.

Gospel Connection

James cites Amos's prophecy of David's restored tabernacle at the Jerusalem Council to affirm that Gentiles are being gathered into God's people through Christ (Acts 15:16-17), showing that Amos's message of judgment ultimately gives way to a Gospel of restoration reaching far beyond Israel alone.
