Obedience

What the Bible says about obedience to God, how it is connected to love rather than to fear, and how Jesus describes it in John 14 and 15.

At a Glance

Obedience is the natural response of love for Christ, not a means of earning favor — following his commands as evidence of a genuine relationship with him.

Overview

Jesus ties obedience directly to love in John 14 and 15, presenting obedience not as a burdensome legal requirement but as the natural fruit of loving him. This study examines what Jesus teaches about the connection between love and obedience, and what practical obedience looks like for believers today.

Learning Objectives

  • •Understand obedience as flowing from love rather than fear or legalism
  • •Trace Jesus's teaching on obedience in John 14 and 15
  • •Distinguish obedience motivated by love from obedience motivated by obligation
  • •Apply practical obedience in daily discipleship

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

John 15:10

Read It in Context

This study quotes John 15:10, but no verse stands alone. Open a Bible and read the whole surrounding chapter to see the full argument the passage sits within, then look up the other references cited throughout this study — John 14:15 and beyond — in their own context. Scripture is the final authority here, not this summary.

Historical & Literary Context

Jesus spoke these words to his disciples during the Last Supper discourse, just before his crucifixion, tying obedience to the intimate abiding relationship he describes through the vine and branches image in John 15. His own obedience to the Father becomes the pattern for the disciples' obedience to him.

Love Produces Obedience

John 14:15 states plainly that keeping Jesus's commandments flows from loving him — obedience is the evidence, not the cause, of love. This reorders obedience away from legalistic performance and toward relational devotion.

Abiding Through Obedience

John 15:10 connects obedience to abiding in Christ's love, using Jesus's own obedience to the Father as the pattern. Obedience is not isolated compliance but the pathway of continuing, intimate relationship.

Obedience as Evidence of Genuine Faith

1 John 2:3-4 states that we know we have come to know Christ if we keep his commandments, and calls a claim to know him without obedience a lie. Obedience functions as visible evidence of authentic faith.

Christ-Centered Focus

Jesus himself modeled perfect obedience to the Father, even to the point of death on a cross (Philippians 2:8), and it is union with him — not self-effort — that produces genuine obedience in believers.

Practical Application

Examine areas of resistance to obedience as opportunities to grow in love for Christ, remembering that obedience is meant to flow from relationship and gratitude, not fear of rejection or hope of earning favor.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I want my obedience to flow from love for you, not obligation or fear. Help me to keep your commandments as the natural response of a heart that treasures you. Amen.

Scripture Memory

"If ye love me, keep my commandments."
