Baptism
The meaning and significance of baptism as taught in the New Testament.
Overview
Historical and Literary Context
Baptism has roots in Jewish ceremonial washings and John the Baptist's baptism of repentance, but the New Testament gives it new, Christ-centered meaning: identification with Jesus himself, commanded as part of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19).
So many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death... that we also should walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:3-4 (KJV)
Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.
Acts 2:38 (KJV)
What Scripture Explicitly Says
Scripture explicitly commands baptism as part of making disciples (Matthew 28:19), links it symbolically to Christ's burial and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4, Colossians 2:12), and records new believers being baptized promptly upon professing faith throughout Acts (Acts 8:36-38, 16:33).
Questions Christians Discuss
Christians hold differing convictions on the mode (immersion, pouring, sprinkling) and proper subjects (believers only, or believers and their households) of baptism. This app presents baptism's clear New Testament meaning while acknowledging these longstanding, sincerely held differences among Christians.
Gospel Connection
Baptism does not save; it pictures the salvation already accomplished through faith in Christ's death and resurrection (1 Peter 3:21 explicitly clarifies it is not the removal of filth from the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God).
Practical Application
Baptism is a public, one-time act of obedience and testimony, not a private or optional add-on to faith, and it marks a believer's identification with the visible church.
