Birth Stones Have Connections With the Horoscope
The occult connection of birth stones.
The tradition of birthstones assigns a specific gemstone to each month of birth. Many people wear birthstone jewelry without any spiritual meaning attached to it. But the tradition itself has roots in astrology, and the question for believers is one of discernment: What meaning and use is being assigned to the object? Is it simply decorative, or is it being treated as an amulet with spiritual power? This study examines the issue biblically, without fear and without superstition.
Key Scripture
There shall not be found among you any one that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (KJV)
Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them.
Isaiah 47:13-14 (KJV)
Biblical Context
The tradition of birthstones does not come from the Bible. The twelve stones mentioned in Scripture — in the High Priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:17-20) and the foundations of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:19-20) — were not assigned by birth month for luck or protection. They were covenant symbols representing the twelve tribes of Israel and the foundations of God's redeemed people. They were not amulets.
The birthstone tradition, as it developed historically, is connected to astrology. Each stone is associated with a zodiac sign and a month. In its original intent, wearing a birthstone was a form of amulet — an object believed to bring luck, protection, or spiritual power based on one's astrological sign. This is the spiritual issue: not the stone itself, but the meaning and use assigned to it.
What Scripture Clearly Says
Scripture condemns astrology and divination in the clearest terms. Deuteronomy 18 calls 'observers of times' — those who consult the stars for guidance — an abomination. Isaiah 47 mocks the astrologers and stargazers of Babylon, showing that they cannot save themselves, let alone anyone else. The Bible directs God's people to seek guidance from Him, through His Word and His Spirit, not from the stars or from objects tied to astrological systems.
Scripture also teaches that our trust belongs in God alone. An amulet — an object worn for protection, luck, or spiritual power — is a form of misplaced trust. It turns the heart toward the object rather than toward God. Even if the object is a gemstone, if it is being treated as a source of spiritual power, it has become an idol of the heart.
What Scripture Does Not Establish
Scripture does not teach that a gemstone is automatically spiritually dangerous. A stone is a stone. The chemical composition of a gem does not carry spiritual power. The issue is never the object itself but the meaning, use, and trust assigned to it. A person who wears a birthstone purely as jewelry, with no spiritual meaning attached, is not practicing astrology. A person who wears it as an amulet, believing it brings protection or luck based on their astrological sign, is participating in a practice Scripture condemns.
Scripture does not teach that wearing a birthstone automatically attaches demons to a person. It does not teach that a specific demon is associated with each astrological sign. These teachings go beyond what Scripture establishes. The biblical concern is with the practice of astrology and the misplaced trust in objects — not with the objects themselves.
Biblical Discernment
- 1
Ask: What meaning am I assigning to this object? Am I wearing it as decoration, or as an amulet for protection, luck, or spiritual power?
- 2
If you have been wearing a birthstone or any object as an amulet — trusting it for protection or power — repent of that misplaced trust and put your trust in God alone.
- 3
If you have been involved in astrology — reading horoscopes, consulting zodiac signs, or seeking guidance from the stars — confess it and turn from it.
- 4
If you are wearing jewelry purely as decoration, with no spiritual meaning attached, you are free to do so. Receive it with thanksgiving.
- 5
If your conscience is troubled by a particular object, do not ignore it — but let Scripture, not fear, guide your conscience.
Application
The issue is not the stone but the heart. If you have been treating any object — a birthstone, a crystal, a charm, a zodiac symbol — as a source of spiritual power or protection, turn from that misplaced trust. God alone is your protector and guide. If you have been involved in astrology, confess it and turn from it. You do not need a hidden source of knowledge or power. You have a Father who knows what you need before you ask (Matthew 6:8) and who gives wisdom generously to those who ask (James 1:5). Walk in the freedom of trusting Him alone.
Reflection Questions
- 1
Have you ever worn a birthstone or other object as an amulet — trusting it for protection or luck? What would it mean to put your trust in God alone?
- 2
Have you been involved in astrology — horoscopes, zodiac signs, or seeking guidance from the stars? What would repentance look like?
- 3
How can you distinguish between wearing jewelry as decoration and wearing it as an amulet?
- 4
Where is your trust — in God alone, or in objects, signs, or spiritual systems?
Prayer
Prayer
Father, I confess that I have sometimes placed my trust in objects, signs, or spiritual systems rather than in You alone. I repent of any involvement in astrology or any use of objects as amulets. I turn from misplaced trust to trust in You. You alone are my protector, my guide, and my source of wisdom. Help me to receive Your good gifts with thanksgiving and to live in the freedom of trusting You alone. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
