Walking in Freedom

Living in the freedom Christ provides through His death and resurrection. Abiding in Christ, walking by the Spirit, resisting temptation, and daily dependence on God.

Key Scripture

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

John 8:36 (KJV)

Context

Freedom. It is the desire of every human heart. People spend their lives seeking freedom from bondage, freedom from pain, freedom from fear, freedom from the past. But true freedom, lasting freedom, complete freedom comes only through Jesus Christ.

Many people think freedom means the absence of rules or constraints. But that is not biblical freedom. Biblical freedom is the ability to become who God created you to be. It is freedom from sin's control. It is freedom to live in righteousness. It is freedom to love God with all your heart and to love others as yourself.

If you have been delivered from demons, if you have been healed, if you have been forgiven, you are free. But remaining free requires intentional choices. It requires abiding in Christ. It requires walking by the Spirit. It requires daily dependence on God and resistance to temptation.

What Does the Bible Say?

Christ's Freedom Is Complete

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

John 8:36 (KJV)

Jesus came to set captives free. His freedom is complete. It is not partial or temporary. When Jesus sets you free, you are free indeed. This is not merely freedom from demonic oppression. It is freedom from sin. It is freedom from guilt. It is freedom from shame. It is freedom from the power of death.

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more. Death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Romans 6:9-10 (KJV)

Christ's death and resurrection freed all believers from the penalty and power of sin. When you believe in Jesus, His victory becomes your victory. His freedom becomes your freedom.

Abiding in Christ Brings Freedom

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, Ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

John 15:1-5 (KJV)

Abiding in Christ means remaining connected to Him. It means staying in His presence. It means feeding on His Word. It means keeping His commandments. When you abide in Christ, you bear fruit. You become fruitful. You become free from the fruitlessness of sin.

Walking by the Spirit Produces Freedom

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Galatians 5:16-17 (KJV)

Freedom is not found in following the desires of the flesh. Freedom is found in walking by the Spirit. When you walk by the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. The Spirit gives you power to say no to temptation.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

When you walk by the Spirit, these fruits grow in your life. This is real freedom. This is freedom to love. This is freedom to experience joy and peace. This is freedom to be gentle and kind.

Resisting Temptation Maintains Freedom

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)

Every temptation you face, God provides a way of escape. You are not overcome by temptation. You have the power through God to resist it. Freedom means exercising the power to say no.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7 (KJV)

Submit to God first. Then resist the devil. When you resist him, he flees. You have the authority and the power to resist temptation and maintain your freedom.

Growing in Obedience Deepens Freedom

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14:15 (KJV)

Love for Jesus is expressed through obedience. The more you obey God, the more deeply you understand and experience His freedom. Obedience is not restrictive. It is liberating.

Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:18 (KJV)

Freedom from sin leads to service of righteousness. This is not slavery. This is the highest freedom. You are free to serve God. You are free to do what is right. You are free to live holy.

Daily Dependence on God Sustains Freedom

Give us this day our daily bread.

Matthew 6:11 (KJV)

Just as you need physical bread daily, you need spiritual nourishment daily. You need to depend on God each day for strength, guidance, and protection. This daily dependence is how you maintain freedom.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

Bring every situation to God in prayer. Do not worry. Trust Him. When you do, God's peace will guard your heart and your mind. This peace is the mark of true freedom.

Understanding the Passage

Freedom in Christ is not something you earn. It is a gift purchased by Christ's death and resurrection. When you believe in Jesus, this freedom is yours. But possessing freedom and walking in freedom are two different things.

To walk in freedom, you must abide in Christ. This means staying connected to Him through prayer, through Scripture study, through worship, and through obedience. As you abide in Christ, you grow in your understanding of freedom and in your ability to maintain it.

Walking by the Spirit means making intentional choices to follow the Holy Spirit's leading rather than following the desires of the flesh. The flesh wants sin. The Spirit wants righteousness. When you choose the Spirit, you choose freedom.

Resisting temptation means saying no to the enemy's offers of false freedom. The enemy tries to convince you that sin will bring freedom. But sin always brings bondage. Real freedom is found in resisting temptation and choosing obedience.

Growing in obedience deepens your freedom. As you obey God more consistently, you experience more of His blessing. Your obedience removes obstacles to your freedom. It opens doors to deeper fellowship with God and to greater fruit in your life.

Daily dependence on God is the key to sustaining freedom. You cannot maintain freedom on yesterday's strength or yesterday's supply. You need God today. You need His grace today. You need His guidance today.

What This Means Today

If you have received deliverance, commit to walking in your freedom. You are free. Begin believing this truth today. Speak it aloud. Declare that you are free in Jesus Christ.

Develop a habit of abiding in Christ. Set aside time daily to spend with Jesus. Read His Word. Pray. Worship. Listen to His voice. As you abide in Him, you will experience the fruit of freedom in your life.

Make the choice to walk by the Spirit. When tempted to sin, pause and ask yourself: What would the Spirit have me do? Choose the Spirit's way. The more you practice this, the more natural it becomes.

Resist temptation when it comes. You have been given the power to resist. You have been given a way of escape. Use your authority in Jesus's name. Say no to temptation. Choose freedom.

Commit to growing in obedience. Look at your life. Are there areas where you are not fully obeying God? Confess these areas and ask God to help you grow in obedience. As you obey, you will experience greater freedom.

Establish a daily dependence on God. Begin each day in prayer. Ask God for what you need. Ask Him for guidance. Ask Him for protection. Ask Him for strength. Throughout the day, bring every situation to Him in prayer. End each day in gratitude and in prayer.
