Gold Dust Revival — Another False Revival

Warning about false revival movements.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, reports spread of gold dust, gold fillings, and gold oil appearing supernaturally during worship services. This was presented as a sign of revival. But Scripture calls believers to test every spiritual phenomenon — not to dismiss it automatically, and not to accept it uncritically, but to examine it by God's Word. This study examines how to test spiritual phenomena biblically.

Key Scripture

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1 (KJV)

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Matthew 7:20 (KJV)

Biblical Context

Scripture does not tell believers to accept every supernatural phenomenon as from God. It tells us to test every spirit, to test every phenomenon, and to examine the fruit. Jesus warned that false prophets would come performing signs and wonders (Matthew 24:24). Paul warned that Satan can masquerade as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). The existence of a supernatural phenomenon does not automatically mean God is its source.

At the same time, Scripture does not dismiss the supernatural. God does work in ways that defy natural explanation. The question is not whether something is supernatural, but whether it is from God. The test is always: Does it align with Scripture? Does it produce lasting fruit? Does it exalt Christ?

What Scripture Clearly Says

Scripture calls believers to test everything and hold fast to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21). It tells us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1). It tells us that genuine spiritual work produces lasting fruit — repentance, faith, holiness, love, and lives transformed by the gospel (Galatians 5:22-23; Matthew 7:16-20). It tells us that genuine spiritual work exalts Jesus Christ, not the experience itself or the person through whom it comes (John 16:14; 1 Corinthians 1:31).

Testing Spiritual Phenomena

  1. 1

Scripture: Does it align with God's Word? God does not contradict what He has already spoken.

  2. 2

Fruit: Does it produce lasting transformation — repentance, holiness, love, and lives changed by the gospel? Or does it produce only excitement and crowds?

  3. 3

Christ: Does it exalt Jesus Christ, or does it exalt the experience, the person, or the movement?

  4. 4

Gospel: Does it lead people to the gospel of Jesus Christ — salvation by grace through faith in Him who died and rose again?

  5. 5

Freedom: Does it produce genuine freedom from sin and bondage, or does it create dependence on experiences?

Application

Do not chase experiences. Chase Christ. If you have been involved in movements that emphasized signs and wonders without producing lasting fruit, repent of valuing signs over obedience. Ask God for the gift of discernment. Test everything by His Word. Trust the Holy Spirit to lead you into genuine encounters with God that produce lasting transformation — repentance, freedom, and Christlikeness. A genuine move of God's Spirit always results in lives that look more like Jesus.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1

Have you ever chased spiritual experiences rather than chasing Christ? What would it mean to seek Him first?

  2. 2

How can you develop the kind of discernment that tests every phenomenon by Scripture?

  3. 3

What fruit has your spiritual life produced — lasting transformation, or only excitement?

  4. 4

How can you keep Christ central rather than exalting experiences or movements?

Prayer

Prayer

Father, give me the gift of discernment. Help me to test all spiritual phenomena by Your Word. I repent of chasing experiences rather than chasing You. I repent of valuing signs over obedience. Lead me into genuine encounters with Your Holy Spirit that produce lasting fruit — repentance, freedom, and Christlikeness. Let Jesus Christ be central in all I seek and all I do. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
